Arte de Favelas was chosen for the final 8 of the Audi Design Foundation’s Designs of Substance competition.
The children of the Favelas, cover and paint empty cigarette packets, or create jewellery to put inside.
They then bring their finished art to the community centre where they receive money for their talents.
The art is then sold to tourists of the Brazilian beaches, through a network of shops and official vending machines. Any additional profits made would go back into the Favela community to improve the standard of living.
This system encourages creativity and allows children to make much needed money.
The final product consists of a cheap and easy to produce art pack, costing less than 50p each.
These art packs contain all the equipment needed to start creating art, including simple visual instructions.
